State Funding Restores Budget Shortfall in NCSC’s Parents Program and Teen Center

Boston- Today State Representatives Peter J. Koutoujian, Ruth Balser and Kay Khan announced that $155,000 was included in the House Budget for FY09 for the Newton Community Service Center ’s Parents Program and Teen Center .

Each year quality programs at NCSC are stretched to meet the demands of the Newton Community. This year in particular, without state funding these two programs, the Parents Program and the Teen Center face an uncertain future due to increasing competition for shrinking philanthropic dollars, and a reduction in funding from the United Way, a former affiliate member.  Without the state’s assistance, their ability to serve the low income, and needy families in the cities of Newton and Waltham would have been in jeopardy.

The Parents Program at Newton Community Service Center offers teens and adults a comprehensive network of support services during pregnancy and the early years of child rearing.  The program focuses on improving parenting skills, and works to ensure that young people realize their own needs and potential.

The Teen Center uses a unique model with a proven ability to combat issues of violence, drugs and emotional trauma that are prevalent in adolescent populations.  It gives teens opportunities to get involved, become leaders, learn new skills, and make a difference.

The NCSC is a 101 year-old multi-service agency that serves a racially, ethnically, economically and culturally diverse population from Newton , Waltham , and surrounding communities, representing the “hidden poor.”

The budget now moves to the Senate for further consideration.
