BUDGET CONFERENCE COMMITTEE APPROVES SPENDING FOR DANGEROUS ROADWAY
Boston, MA- State Reps. Peter Koutoujian (D-Waltham), Rachel Kaprielian (D-Watertown), Kay Khan (D-Newton), Ruth Balser (D-Newton) today announced the House of Representatives and Senate Budget Conference Committee has included $250,000 for design work to Nonantum Road in Watertown and Newton, virtually clearing the way for work to begin on one of the state’s most dangerous roadways.
Koutoujian and the local delegation fought during the past month to get the money included, first as a House budget amendment, and then to ensure the Conference Committee included it in its final budget plan. The funding will follow a $40,000 state-funded study of the heavily traveled roadway, which runs through Newton and Watertown, and is the scene of frequent motor vehicle accidents.
“This is truly great news,” said Koutoujian. “We’ve fought very hard during tight fiscal times to make Nonantum Road a priority in the state budget. This is a great example of how lawmakers, local officials, police, and the community can come together to bring about positive change. Nonantum Road is one its way to becoming much safer for the thousands of motorists who depend on it each day.” The state Division of Conservation and Recreation maintains jurisdiction of the roadway. DCR held public hearings in Newton and Watertown last fall to solicit input on the findings of the $40,000 study.
“I’m very grateful to Rep. Kououtjian and the rest of the delegation for working so hard to see these critical safety improvements are included in the state budget,” said Watertown Town Councilor Jonathan Hecht.” This will safe lives.”
