BOSTON – Rep. Peter Koutoujian was honored recently by the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health at its annual Citizen's Breakfast in the Great Hall at the State House. The event provides an opportunity for people with mental illness, family members, providers and citizen advisory boards to interact with state legislators.

DMH Commissioner Elizabeth Childs, M.D., presented the award to Rep. Koutoujian for his/her work and support on behalf of citizens with mental illnesses. “This is an opportunity for consumers, families and advocates to meet with their legislators, thank them for their support, and showcase the many services DMH provides to individuals with serious mental illness,” said Commissioner Childs.

The true centerpiece of the breakfast is the personal stories told by DMH clients and their families. Their stories put a face on mental illness, demonstrate that treatment works, and remind us that people with mental illness can achieve important accomplishments. The power of hope and recovery is prominent in the narratives the speakers presented.

More than 200 people including legislators, consumers, family members and advocates attended the breakfast.
