Boston – State Rep. Peter Koutoujian (D-Waltham) today announced he has been appointed to a third term as House Chairman of the Legislature’s Joint Committee on Public Health.

Koutoujian has served as the committee’s co-chairman since 2003, during which time the committee has advanced several key pieces of health legislation, including a state-wide workplace smoking ban, increased access to emergency contraception, protection against Shaken Baby Syndrome, and most recently a bill requiring Automatic External Defibrillators in health clubs.

“I’m extremely honored and excited to be able to serve another term as House Chairman of the Public Health Committee,” said Koutoujian. “Public Health affects everyone’s lives and we have a tremendous opportunity to not only better understand our public health needs, but implement laws and policies that ensure we all lead healthier lives.”

In addition to the several public hearings the committee will hold over the next two years to address a wide array of public health bills, Koutoujian said he plans to hold special oversight hearings that can better educate the Legislature on key public health issues. Last session, the committee’s oversight hearings included flu pandemics, youth sports safety, local public health effectiveness and Lyme disease.
